Portland ICE facility protests surge after federal shooting; 6 arrested
PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) - Hundreds of protesters gathered at the ICE facility on the South Waterfront Thursday night following the shooting of two people in Southeast Portland by federal officers earlier that day.
The demonstration marked the busiest activity at the facility in months, with protesters at times blocking traffic on South Macadam Avenue in front of the building. The protests came after a deadly shooting in Minneapolis on Wednesday that also sparked demonstrations.
Portland police officers deployed bike squads and multiple patrol cars and vans throughout the night. Officers repeatedly entered the roadway to push protesters onto sidewalks and maintained positions to keep traffic flowing and allow vehicles to enter and exit the ICE facility.
Police made announcements that targeted arrests would begin for people in the roadway. Officers arrested six people, bringing the total number of arrests related to ICE facility protests to 79 since June.
Those arrested were identified by police as:
28-year-old Ezekiel Mclain, of Portland, charged with riot, second-degree disorderly conduct, interfering with a peace officer
24-year-old Benjamin J. Davis, of Portland, charged with riot, second-degree disorderly conduct, interfering with a peace officer
24-year-old Seth Todd, of Clackamas, charged with second-degree disorderly conduct, interfering with a peace officer
28-year-old Jordan Brokaw, of Portland, charged with second-degree-disorderly conduct
48-year-old Ashley Daugherty, charged with second-degree disorderly conduct, interfering with a peace officer
35-year-old Daryn Herzberg, of Portland, charged with second-degree conduct
The scene included a burning American flag and angry shouting directed at ICE officers.
Department of Homeland Security officers exited the facility multiple times to clear the driveway, announcing themselves before clearing the roadway in front of the building.
More protests are planned throughout the weekend.
